Mar Chica, Lagune de Nador, Oriental Region, Morocco

The Marchica lagoon, classified as Site of Biological and Ecological Interest and RAMSAR since 2005, is one of the most important lagoons in the Mediterranean. It is a major issue for the Oriental region of Morocco and the province of Nador in particular. It is of interest at the same time economic, biological, ecological and tourist.

It has an area of 115km2, a coastline 25km long separates it from the Mediterranean.

This lagoon suffered from land and sea pollution resulting from the washing of iron ore at the beginning of the century, its depollution required the establishment of a sewage treatment plant (WWTP), a controlled landfill , the opening of a pass that is the conversion of the old pass to the marina where the sand of the drainages is used for the artificial beach and the Golf Academy and as well as cleaning and recycling operations.
