Maplelawn Garden

A hidden gem, this historic walled garden in Westboro features beautiful perennial plants and an intimate, serene atmosphere. The garden reflects a blend of formal and informal landscaping styles. Maplelawn Garden, located at 529 Richmond Road in Ottawa’s Westboro neighbourhood, is a rare and well-preserved example of a 19th-century walled garden in Canada. Established between 1831 and 1834 by Scottish immigrant William Thomson, the garden reflects European design traditions and offers a glimpse into early Canadian estate life.

The garden features a symmetrical layout with gravel paths intersecting at an oval central bed, dividing the space into four quadrants. Surrounded by original stone walls, it showcases a variety of perennials, including peonies, that have been carefully maintained and restored over the years. The design emphasizes both ornamental beauty and functionality, providing a space for both aesthetic enjoyment and practical use.

In 1989, Maplelawn Garden was designated a National Historic Site of Canada, recognizing its historical and architectural significance. Since 1993, the garden has been stewarded by the Friends of Maplelawn Garden, a volunteer group dedicated to its preservation and maintenance. Their efforts ensure that the garden remains a vibrant and accessible space for visitors to enjoy.

The adjacent Maplelawn House, constructed in the same period, now houses The Keg Manor restaurant. The combination of the historic house and its surrounding garden offers a unique opportunity to experience a piece of Ottawa’s heritage.([heritageottawa.org. Visitors to Maplelawn Garden can enjoy the tranquil atmosphere, historical ambiance, and the beauty of a well-maintained, living piece of Canada’s past.
