Liliesleaf Farm, located in the northern Johannesburg suburb of Rivonia, is a national heritage site of immense political and historical significance. In the early 1960s, it served as the secret headquarters and safe house for the leaders of the African National Congress (ANC) and Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK), marking a crucial turning point in the liberation movement’s shift toward armed struggle against apartheid.
The farm was raided by police in 1963, leading to the arrest of key figures and the subsequent Rivonia Trial, which ultimately resulted in life sentences for Nelson Mandela and other prominent leaders. Today, the farm operates as a museum that uses interactive exhibits and restored buildings to tell the compelling story of those turbulent years, honoring the bravery and commitment of the men and women who were pivotal in the anti-apartheid fight.
