Lenin Square, Khabarovsk, Khabarovsk Krai, Russia

The Lenin Square was constructed in 1864, and is one of the best known squares in Russia. It is over 25,000 square meters in size, and ranks second to Red Square in Moscow, which is the biggest square in Russia. This square was previously named Freedom Square, then Stalin Square in 1950, before being renamed Lenin Square in 1957. We planned to visit all Lenin statues on our Russia trip, so were happy when we located this square. We took trolley bus # 1 from the Airport, directly to the square. The bus stops at the south west corner of the square, and the fare was 20 rubles. To ensure that you do not pass the square, sit on the left hand side of the bus, and you will be sure to see the Lenin Statue at the northern section of the square.

The statue of Lenin is in a posture of left hand holding his jacket and right hand in his pants pocket. A seemingly relaxed Lenin, which was very different to the normal statues where he” points the way to the future”. At the base of the statue is a gold motif, which was the state symbol of the Soviet Union. It is a design of a hammer and sickle insignia covering the circular figure of the earth and a soviet star above it. This design is surrounded by “wrapped” ears of wheat, and a setting sun at the base of the wheat. The Lenin statue is technically not int he square, as you have to cross Pushkina Street to get close to the statue. Behind the statue is a red brick building, which houses the modern art museum. The photos of Lenin with the brick facade in the background give an ancient feel to this location.
