Lantan, Lantan Scenic Area, East District, Chiayi City, Taiwán 

Lantan Reservoir or called Lantan Scenic Area is located in the mountains eastside of Chiayi, 3 km from the city. It was told to be first dug by the Dutch 300 years ago during the colonial period which impounds the water from Bajhang River but was abandoned during the Qing dynasty. During the Japanese colonial period, the actual reservoir was built and it remains to be the main water source of Chiayi until today. A route along the dam is the best way to view the whole reservoir. The locals call it the back garden of Chiayi.

Lantan is rich in natural resources as well as beautiful scenery. Many hiking routes are organized throughout the scenic area, a popular attraction for weekends and bird watching. The camping ground holds up to 30 tents, perfect for a weekend natural getaway. It takes around 90 min to go around the whole scenic area. It’s beautiful throughout the seasons, especially during the winter when the fogs hovers over the lake. The Lantan Mountain Park is known as the Chiayi back Garden. The Chiayi Natural Protective Group set up several watching post recording the natural environment.

The most appealing feature of Lantan Scenic Area is the Lantan Moon. The Lantan Lake is so clear, when the night falls and foggy, it’s the most beautiful scenery Lantan has to offer. Color lighting fountain is installed for a more dynamic scene. The Heart of the Lake is a recently designed landmark. It’s a landscape art piece made with aluminum with the concept of bird’s nest on the water. Day and night, Sunny or rain, as the light hits the Heart, it’s a must see attraction.
