Lake Rotorua, Ngongotaha, Rotorua 3010, Bay of Plenty, Bay of Plenty, New Zealand

Lake Rotorua is the largest lake in the region, but is also one of the shallowest. It averages 10 meters deep but can reach up to 25 meters deep. The lake was formed when a large volcano in the Taupo Volcanic Zone erupted and collapsed over 240,000 years ago.

The area remains one of the most active geothermic regions in the world. Water from nearby streams and rivers has filled the crater. The Ngongotaha Stream is the largest tributary of the lake and is the one of the most heavily fished areas in New Zealand. The high sulphur content in the lake are responsible for the smell and yellowish – green hue of the lake.
