Lake Merritt

Lake Merritt

Lake Merritt in Oakland, California is one of the most unique urban spaces in the United States. Its three mile shoreline in the center of an exceptionally diverse city is a special place where nature and nurture migrates and mingles daily. This tidal lagoon is home to the United States’ oldest designated wildlife refuge dating from 1870. Lake Merritt, often called the jewel of Oakland, holds the distinction of being the United States’ first official wildlife refuge, established in 1870, long before it became surrounded by the vibrant, diverse city we know today. Nestled just east of downtown Oakland and a short BART ride from San Francisco, this tidal lagoon was originally an arm of the San Francisco Bay until the 1860s when visionaries dammed and shaped it into a serene, heart-shaped lake spanning 155 acres. Its Victorian-era beginnings are still visible in the elegant Camron-Stanford House on its shores and the beautifully restored 1913 Beaux-Arts pergola at the northeast end.

Over the decades, Lake Merritt has mirrored Oakland’s own story: a gathering place for Indigenous Ohlone people long before colonization, a fashionable resort destination in the early 20th century, a center of civil rights marches in the 1960s and 1970s, and now one of the most culturally rich and inclusive public spaces in the Bay Area. On any weekend you’ll hear drumming circles, gospel choirs rehearsing in the gardens, dragon boat teams practicing, and families speaking a dozen languages while sharing picnics under the palms. Walking, jogging, or cycling the glowing 3.4-mile necklace of lights that encircles the lake at night feels almost magical, with the downtown Oakland skyline reflecting across the water and the historic Grand Lake Theater sign twinkling in the distance.

The Gardens at Lake Merritt, with their themed beds of palms, succulents, bonsai, and sensory plants, offer quiet beauty year-round beauty, while the nearby Children’s Fairyland continues to delight young visitors with its whimsical storybook sets since 1950. Paddle boats and gondola rides glide across the surface, herons and egrets stalk the shallows, and the Saturday farmers’ market at Splash Pad Park brings farm-fresh produce and artisan foods right to the water’s edge. Food lovers can wander a few blocks to Grand Avenue or Lakeshore for everything from Ethiopian injera to wood-fired pizza and legendary soul food at Lois the Pie Queen. Whether you come for the free summer festivals, the Wednesday evening sailboat races, the lantern-lit moon-viewing parties in autumn, or simply to sit on a bench and watch the city breathe, Lake Merritt welcomes everyone with an open, easy warmth that feels both timeless and unmistakably alive.
