Kuriat Islands, Tunisia
Kuriat is the name of a Tunisian archipelago consisting of two small islands located east of Monastir.
The largest, 3.5 kilometers long and two kilometers wide, covers about 270 hectares . Separated by two kilometers, the small one covers about one hundred hectares, most of which is composed of lowlands and intertidal plains. The substrate consists of sandstone and carbonate rocks covered with sand deposited by the sea. The islands are flat and low.
These islands play an important role in terms of biodiversity : they constitute a migratory stopover for a bird of importance such as the railling gull, classified as a vulnerable species. They are also one of the main nesting sites of the loggerhead turtle south of the Mediterranean, and as such, constitute a vulnerable ecosystem .
It should be noted that in the northern and rocky part of the two islands and at very shallow depths there are maërl bottom formations that are considered very rare and very vulnerable on a Mediterranean scale.
