With well-known greats of impressionism, expressionism and European pre-war modernism, the Gelsenkirchen art museum invites you to trace the path of modern art. Works of abstract art, pop art and formative, contemporary positions point to the present. The collection includes, among others, paintings by Lovis Corinth, Max Ernst, Hannah Höch, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Max Liebermann, René Magritte, Paula Modersohn-Becker, László Moholy-Nagy, Max Pechstein, Gerhard Richter and Andy Warhol.
From Albrecht Dürer to Pablo Picasso: with over 3,000 sheets, the graphic collection covers several centuries of artistic creation and various movements. The oldest etching from 1504 goes back to Albrecht Dürer and, together with a sheet by Rembrandt, forms the historical core of the collection. The collection also offers an extraordinary insight into expressionist graphics – including drawings and prints by Ernst Barlach, Marc Chagall, Oskar Kokoschka and Käthe Kollwitz.
The kinetic collection of the Kunstmuseum Gelsenkirchen is known nationally for its wide range of themes and materials. The history of the development of kinetic art can be experienced here with over 80 works by international artists: from the beginnings of Op Art, through light and movement kinetic objects to interactive works. The collection includes, among others, works by Yaacov Agam, Werner Bauer, Walter Giers, Heinz Mack, Otto Piene, Jesús Rafael Soto, Günther Uecker, Martin Willing, Peter Vogel and the Gelsenkirchen artists Rolf Glasmeier and Günter Tollmann.
