Kazansky Female Monastery, Vyshny Volochyok, Tver Oblast, Russia 

Brought at the end of the XVI century. merchants from Vyshnevolotsk, the list of the Kazan icon of the Mother of God, which became a locally sacred shrine, was placed in a country chapel near the source, near the city cemetery. Next to this place in 1870 at the expense of philanthropists, with the assistance of the leader of the Vyshnevolotsky nobility, Prince AS. Putyatin was acquired to create a women’s community of free land of 80 to 60 fathoms.

January 1, 1871 came to Vyshny Volochek for the organization of the community nun Dosifeya (Alexandra Vasilievna Saltykova). Soon, the first sisters began to come to her, about 30 people gathered. The original life of the sisters of the new monastery was extremely difficult. Means were not even for food. Days and nights of the sister, and especially Mother Dosifei, yelled to the Queen of Heaven about the arrangement of the monastery.

On July 8/21, 1872 The Kazan community (24 sisters) with a hospital for 8 people was approved by the Synod, Prince AS. Putyatin applied for the approval of nun Dosifei by the abbess of the community. By the time his own efforts there was built a two-story building (a stone bottom, a wooden top), in which a hospital was built, and three wooden outhouses. Local residents, especially the male part of the population, opposed the establishment of a convent at the indicated place.

July 31, 1872 served as a fire. Sisters of the monastery fervently prayed to the Queen of Heaven, the Psalms read with tears, the fire was extinguished. In 1873, the house church of the Bogolyubsk icon of the Mother of God was consecrated in the hospital building, and a belfry was erected over the southern gates that adjoined it. In the late 1870’s – 1880’s. stone construction was launched with the help of philanthropists, of whom Prince AS was the largest.
