John V. Lindsay East River Park

6-acre riverside park with bike paths, an amphitheater & playgrounds, plus sports courts & fields. The John V Lindsay East River Park, also known as the East River Park, is a park in New York City. It is located on the Lower East Side of the Manhattan borough of NYC. The park is almost 58 acres huge and stretches along the East River from Montgomery Street up to 12th Street on the east side of the FDR Drive.

John V. Lindsay East River Park, nestled along the Lower East Side of Manhattan, spans 57 acres of waterfront bliss where the East River meets the pulse of New York City. Originally opened in 1939 as a vital green escape amid urban sprawl, it was renamed in 2001 to honor former Mayor John V. Lindsay, whose visionary policies championed public spaces and environmental stewardship during his tenure from 1966 to 1973. Bisected by the towering Williamsburg Bridge and flanked by the FDR Drive, this park transforms a once-industrial shoreline into a haven for joggers, families, and sunset seekers, all while offering unobstructed views of the iconic Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridges that define the skyline.

At its heart, the park buzzes with recreational energy, boasting eight baseball and softball fields, dedicated soccer pitches, basketball courts, and a sprawling tennis complex that draws competitive crowds year-round. A resilient 1.2-mile running track winds through the grounds, perfect for morning laps or casual strolls, while children’s playgrounds and open lawns invite picnics and impromptu games under the summer sun. Fishing piers extend into the river for patient anglers, and an amphitheater hosts free concerts and community events, fostering a sense of neighborhood unity in a city that often feels fragmented.

Today, as of late 2025, the park shines brighter than ever following the ambitious East Side Coastal Resiliency project, completed earlier this year to fortify it against rising seas and storms like Hurricane Sandy in 2012. Elevated landscapes now blend seamlessly with modern amenities—universal access bridges, flexible event lawns, and enhanced waterfront paths—ensuring it not only endures climate challenges but thrives as a model of adaptive urban design. Visitors rave about its renewed vibrancy, where resilient infrastructure meets timeless joy, proving that New York’s green gems can evolve without losing their soul.
