Jewish Community of Bermuda

Serves as the heartbeat of Jewish life on the island, operating as a volunteer-led organization that embraces members from diverse backgrounds. This inclusive community welcomes Orthodox, Conservative, and Reform individuals, creating a unique egalitarian space where everyone contributes to the spiritual and social fabric of the group. While the island’s Jewish history dates back to the early 1600s with the naming of Jews Bay, the contemporary congregation found its footing in the 20th century through connections with the local United States Naval Base.

The community is characterized by its resourcefulness and warmth, managing everything from educational programming to holiday celebrations through dedicated local leadership. After many years of gathering in private homes, the community established a dedicated center in Pembroke which now serves as a hub for Shabbat services, Hebrew school classes, and cultural events. This center houses a Sefer Torah donated by a former member, symbolizing the deep roots and continuity of faith maintained by this small but vibrant group of approximately 120 residents and expatriates.

Historically, the Jewish experience in Bermuda has transitioned from early periods of merchant activity and 18th-century restrictive laws to becoming a recognized and respected part of the modern island landscape. A significant moment in local history was the 1943 Bermuda Conference, where international delegates discussed the rescue of European Jews during World War II, a topic still studied for its historical weight. Today, the community actively engages with both locals and tourists, providing a sense of belonging and a Jewish touch of home for those visiting the Atlantic archipelago.

Tourists and business travelers are often invited to join the monthly Friday night Shabbat services and communal holiday meals, such as the large annual Passover Seder. The community also maintains its own Jewish cemetery and organizes various youth programs, including Torah Tots and a weekly Hebrew school for children. These activities ensure that Jewish traditions are passed down to the next generation while fostering a strong sense of identity and togetherness in a beautiful paradise setting.

Visitors to the community center will find an atmosphere that is deeply personal and inviting, reflecting the true spirit of Bermudian hospitality combined with timeless Jewish values. The organization is a registered charity and a member of the Commonwealth Jewish Council, highlighting its role in the global Jewish network. Whether you are looking to attend a service or simply learn more about this hidden gem of island history, the community offers an enriching cultural perspective that adds depth to any visit to Bermuda.
