The Director of Football is one of the most pivotal, complex, and far-reaching positions in the modern game — a role that sits at the very intersection of sporting vision, strategic leadership, and operational excellence, and whose influence shapes every dimension of a football club’s present performance and future trajectory. Operating at the highest level of the club’s football hierarchy, the Director of Football carries ultimate responsibility for the full spectrum of the football operation — from the identification, recruitment, and retention of world-class playing talent, to the oversight of the scouting network, the management of the Academy and player development pathways, the coordination of performance science, medical, and data analytics departments, and the strategic alignment of both the men’s and women’s senior sides. Working in close partnership with the Chief Executive Officer and reporting to the club’s ownership, the Director of Football serves as the essential bridge between the commercial ambitions of the boardroom and the sporting ambitions of the dressing room — ensuring that every decision made across the football department, from a first-team transfer to the development of a sixteen-year-old Academy prospect, flows from a single, coherent, and clearly articulated vision of what the club is, what it stands for, and where it is going. In the truest and most complete sense, the Director of Football is the architect of a football club’s identity — the individual charged not merely with building a squad, but with building a culture, a philosophy, and a sustainable pathway to the very highest levels of the beautiful game.
