International Flag Display
The International Flag Display at Commonwealth Place, in the centre of the National Triangle, colourfully acknowledges the international presence in the National Capital. The flags are flown 24 hours a day and are lit at night, casting a vivid reflection on the Central Basin of Lake Burley Griffin. Flag Raising Ceremonies are also held at the International Flag Display.
Originally launched in 1999, by the Governor General, the Hon Sir William Deane, the display has become an important attraction for tourists and locals alike. The Minister for Regional Development, Territories and Local Government Dr John McVeigh opened a revitalised display 13 June 2018, to which saw the addition of 10 more flags.
110 flags in total are now flown, representing 108 Missions that have a diplomatic presence in Canberra, as well as flags of the European Union and the United Nations, identified by a plaque at the base of each flagpole. All national flags are positioned alphabetically, starting closest to the High Court of Australia. The first country listed is Afghanistan and the last, alphabetically speaking, is Zimbabwe.
