Ibitipoca State Park, Lima Duarte, State of Bahia, Brazil
Ibitipoca State Park is located in Zona da Mata, in the municipalities of Lima Duarte and Santa Rita do Ibitipoca. It occupies the top of the Serra do Ibitipoca, an extension of the Serra da Mantiqueira. With an area of 1,488 hectares, the conservation unit is in the place where the basins of the Rio Grande and the Paraíba do Sul River are divided.
It was created on July 4, 1973, by Law No. 6,126 . ‘Ibitipoca’, the Tupi-Guarani word, means ‘Serra that burst’ or ‘Serra burst’, due to the great incidence of electric discharges (lightning) or the large number of caves. It is one of the most visited Parks of the State, one of the best known in Brazil and one of the main tourist attractions of the region.
