House of Commons in Ottawa

The House of Commons in Ottawa is the lower chamber of Canada’s Parliament and serves as the central place where elected Members of Parliament debate, create, and pass laws that govern the country. It has been a key part of Canadian democracy since the country’s founding in 1867. The building that houses the House of Commons is known for its Gothic Revival architecture, featuring pointed arches, detailed stonework, and an elegant chamber design that reflects both tradition and history.

Currently, due to renovations of the historic Centre Block on Parliament Hill, the House of Commons chamber operates temporarily out of the West Block. Inside, the seating arrangement distinctly places government members on the Speaker’s right and opposition members on the left, symbolizing the democratic balance of power and debate.

The House of Commons is fundamental to Canada’s political system, with MPs representing diverse regions and communities from across the nation. The Speaker of the House ensures orderly conduct during debates and enforces parliamentary rules. The building is open for tours, offering visitors a chance to experience the heart of Canada’s legislative process and appreciate the country’s rich political heritage.
