U.S. Secretary of Agriculture

The U.S. Secretary of Agriculture is the head of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and serves as the primary advisor to the President on agricultural matters. The Secretary is responsible for overseeing national agricultural policy, managing food safety and nutrition programs, supporting rural development, and working to ensure the stability and sustainability of the agricultural economy. The Secretary’s role also involves representing the interests of farmers, ranchers, and agricultural businesses in federal policy decisions.

The Department of Agriculture plays a crucial role in the nation’s economy by administering a wide range of programs related to farming, forestry, and food, as well as providing assistance to rural communities. This includes implementing food assistance programs such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), managing public lands and natural resources, and promoting agricultural research and education.

In addition to domestic responsibilities, the Secretary of Agriculture often represents U.S. agriculture in international trade discussions and works to open new markets for American agricultural products abroad.

The Secretary of Agriculture is nominated by the President and confirmed by the Senate. The Secretary is part of the President’s Cabinet, which is a group of senior officials who head the major departments of the federal government. The current U.S. Secretary of Agriculture is Tom Vilsack, who has held the position since 2009 and again since 2021, after being reappointed by President Joe Biden.
