Hoba Meteorite, Grootfontein, Namibia

Sit on Hoba Meteorite, the world’s largest single-piece meteorite weighing over 60 tons. Discovered in 1920, this strange cuboid rock from outer space–measuring 2.95 by 2.84 m and 1 m high–crashed on this farm some 80,000 years ago. Aged between 200 and 400 million years, this unique piece of rock is made of 82.4 percent iron, 16.4 percent nickel and 0.76 percent cobalt, making it the most naturally occurring piece of iron on Earth’s surface. You can touch the meteorite or sit on the circular stairs around it; there is an information center and a kiosk adjacent to the meteorite site.
