HMAS Kuttabul

Australian Royal Navy Base for Australian submarines and other Naval operations

History

HMAS Kuttabul was originally a Sydney ferry but became notable during World War II when it was converted into a Royal Australian Navy depot ship. Tragically, HMAS Kuttabul became a symbol of the war’s reach into Australia when it was sunk during a Japanese midget submarine attack in Sydney Harbour on the night of May 31 to June 1, 1942. The attack resulted in the deaths of 21 naval personnel, including both Australian and Allied sailors, marking one of the few instances of enemy action on Australian soil during the war.

After the attack, the site of the sinking was used as a base for Australian submarines and other naval operations. Today, the HMAS Kuttabul name lives on through a naval base in Sydney that continues to honor the service of those who perished in the attack and all naval personnel connected to the ship.
