Hisor Fortress, Tajikistan

Explore the fortified residence of the rulers of the Emir of Bukhara at Hisor Fortress, a well-preserved 16th-century fort perched on a hilltop amid mountains. With an impressive pointed entrance arch flanked by two round, bunker-like towers, the fort surveys a strategic area. Climb its walls and explore its niches for canons and guns, and enjoy the panoramic views of the nearby town and market. Explore numerous pavilions made of baked brick. Shrouded in myth and linked with many legends, the area is said to have been occupied by Cyrus the Great and Caliph Ali. Some 4.5 km (3 mi) from Hisor and 27 km (17 mi) west of Dushanbe, the area offers good opportunities for hiking.
