A member of the Senior Foreign Service, class of Minister-Counselor, Marc Dillard arrived in August 2025 as Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Pretoria.
Mr. Dillard has had a range of assignments in Washington and abroad, serving as Deputy Chief of Mission and Chargé d’Affaires, a.i. in Nairobi and Budapest and as Director of the Office of Economic Policy and Public Diplomacy in the Bureau of Economic and Business Affairs. Other postings have included Malawi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Bulgaria, Japan, Korea, and the State Department’s Operations Center. He is the recipient of multiple departmental honor awards and the Presidential Rank Award.
Mr. Dillard received a bachelor’s degree in history from Duke University and a doctorate in political economy and public policy from the University of Southern California. Prior to joining the Department of State, he worked as a consultant in the private sector and taught economics at the university level. His wife, Julia Dillard, is also a Foreign Service Officer. They have two children.
The United States Mission to South Africa serves as the official diplomatic presence of the United States, working to strengthen and deepen the relationship between the two nations. Its core role is to represent U.S. interests, support American citizens, and foster cooperation across political, economic, cultural, educational, and security sectors. Through its embassy in Pretoria and consulates in Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Durban, the Mission acts as a bridge between the American and South African governments, encouraging dialogue, shared opportunities, and mutual respect.
A central responsibility of the Mission is to enhance bilateral relations by promoting democratic governance, sustainable economic growth, public health partnerships, and regional stability. The Mission also works closely with South Africa on major programs such as health initiatives, including collaborations through PEPFAR, trade and investment advancement, science and technology cooperation, and environmental sustainability.
The Mission provides comprehensive consular services to U.S. citizens, including passport renewals, emergency assistance, welfare checks, and support during crises. At the same time, it facilitates travel and cultural exchange by processing visas for South Africans wishing to study, work, invest, or visit the United States.
Public diplomacy is another vital pillar of its mandate. Through cultural programs, educational exchanges, youth leadership initiatives, and partnerships with universities and civil society, the Mission helps foster understanding and build long-lasting connections between the people of both nations. Together, these efforts make the U.S. Mission a key contributor to cooperation, development, and shared progress across South Africa and the region.
