Hillbrow Tower is one of Johannesburg’s most iconic landmarks, standing at 269 meters (883 feet) tall. Completed in 1971, it was originally called the J.G. Strijdom Tower and primarily served as a telecommunications and broadcasting tower, transmitting television, radio, and microwave signals across the Gauteng region. Located in the Hillbrow neighborhood, the tower dominates the city skyline and has become a symbol of Johannesburg, visible from many kilometers away.
It once featured a revolving restaurant called Cloud 9, providing visitors with a panoramic 360-degree view of Johannesburg, although public access is now limited for security reasons. The Hillbrow Tower remains important for telecommunications infrastructure, including radio, TV, and microwave communications. It’s also a point of cultural and historical significance, often featured in photography, tourism guides, and urban exploration projects. Its height and central location make it a key marker in the city’s urban landscape.
