Hanseatic fountain, Veliky Novgorod, Novgorod Oblast, Russia

In June 2009, Veliky Novgorod hosted the International Cultural and Economic Forum “XXIX Hanseatic Days of Modern Times”. The symbol of the holiday was a fountain made in the form of a circle of granite, symbolizing the negotiating table. On the perimeter of the circle are placed inlaid with colored mosaic images of the arms of 16 countries, members of the Hanseatic League of Modern Times.

Currently, the “Hanseatic Union of the New Time” unites more than 170 cities from 15 European countries. The “New Hansa” also included cities that were not part of the medieval Hansa, but managed to prove the existence of trade links with the Hanseatic League during the Middle Ages. The first from the Russian Federation to the union of cities in 1993 entered Veliky Novgorod. In total, 13 Russian cities were accepted in the “New Hansa”: Belozersk, Veliky Novgorod, Veliky Ustyug, Ivangorod, Kaliningrad (former Kenigsberg), Kingisepp (formerly Yamburg), Pskov, Smolensk, Tver, Tikhvin, Torzhok, Totma, Vologda.
