Gurten, Köniz, Switzerland

The “Güsche” at 858 m above sea level can be reached with the Gurtenbahn, the bike or on foot. Those who arrive here will be rewarded with a magnificent view of the city of Bern and a leisure program for families, sportsmen, music lovers and gourmets.

The Gurten is a mountain situated just to the south of Bern, the capital city of Switzerland. It is 858 metres high, and the summit yields views of Bern, of the Jura mountains and of the Alps.

This amazing excursion mountain Gurten belongs also to the community area Köniz. A cable car takes guests in a few minutes from the valley station to the Gurten-Kulm. In addition to a fantastic view, this offers numerous sports and leisure opportunities.

The well-known Bernese Hausberg, which is completely located on Könizer municipality, is easily accessible by the Gurtenbahn. From the valley station in Wabern, the cable car runs over the Zwischenstation Grünenboden to the Gurten-Kulm (864 meters above sea level). On the belts, however, also numerous hiking routes lead.

Above, a huge green space provides space for games and picnics – in winter, sledding and skiing. The ascent of the lookout tower is rewarded with a wonderful panoramic view of the city of Bern, the Bernese Alps and the Jura . Hikers and walkers will find a good way to go on the car-free Gurten. Downhill bikers will get their money’s worth on the two-kilometer circuit.

Ruins of the Ägerten castle Facilities on the Gurten include a hotel, restaurants, a 25-metre-high viewing tower and a children’s playground. Winter sports facilities are available in winter. The Gurtenfestival, a music festival, is held every year in the middle of July.The Gurten is accessible on foot, or by the Gurtenbahn funicular from Wabern. Wabern can itself be reached from central Bern by tram, train or car.
