Grande Mosquée de Sousse, Tunisia

The Grand Mosque of Sousse located near Ribat, the Grand Mosque of Sousse was built in 850 during the reign of the Aghlabid emir, Abu el Abbas, according to the model of the Great Mosque Sidi Okba of Kairouan. at the entrance to the medina, had security reasons. The mosque has the appearance of fortress with massive architecture, flanked by two small towers.

Inside opens a long rectangular courtyard; the prayer room, divided into 13 naves is very elongated. The prayer hall is adorned with a Kufic inscription with slanting letters, a principle taken from the facade of the mosque Bou Ftata. The originality of the mosque lies in the fact that it is devoid of a minaret, which was not a essential element at the time. It is a mosque of a simple and rich style, beautiful and austere at the same time.
