Grand Socco, Place April 9, 1947, Tangier, Taza-Al Hoceima-Taounate, Morocco

The Grand Socco is a large market-place in Tangiers, Morocco. The term, socco is a Spanish corruption of the Arabic souq. The Grand Socco and the Petit Socco occupy Tangiers’ medina and continues to operate as a bazaar or market-place.

The Grand Socco marks the end of the new city and entry to the medina. This is where Tangier locals come to stroll, play, and sit in the surrounding cafes for hours. Just to the square’s north is the Mendoubia Gardens, a shady spot full of fig and dragon trees.
