Goethe House

Tour the house where the writer/politician was born & grew up, with period interiors & exhibition. In the House at Großer Hirschgraben, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was born and spent his childhood and much of his youth there until 1775, when he accepted an invitation from Prince Carl August of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach to move to Weimar. In his parental home, Goethe created his impressive early works, including “Götz von Berlichingen,” the original version of “Faust,” and “The Sorrows of Young Werther,” which made him famous overnight. The unique atmosphere of the authentically furnished rooms brings to life the family life of the Goethes and the Frankfurt of the 18th century.

The Goethe House stands as a testament to the life and work of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Born and raised within its walls, Goethe spent his formative years here before departing for Weimar in 1775. It was within these very rooms that he penned his early masterpieces, including “Götz von Berlichingen,” the original “Faust,” and “The Sorrows of Young Werther,” propelling him to worldwide acclaim. Today, the house offers visitors a glimpse into the intimate family life of the Goethes and the vibrant cultural milieu of 18th-century Frankfurt.
