Gobustan National Historical-Artistic Preserve Museum, Azerbaijan

Gobustan petroglyphs differ with the variety of their themes, originality of the plot, and certain artistic skill.

Small squares for games, tamgas, hollows, big images of lions and gazelles are mainly characteristic of Jingirdag and Yazyly tepe mountains. They are dated back to later periods.

Images of men and women with bows on their shoulders, individual and group dance scenes, images of aurochs, wolves, boars, boats, and fish are chiefly located on Beyukdash Mountain and date back to earlier periods.

There is some commonness of themes in the two-sided openings in the stones, cupules, also, images of crosses, tamgas, swastikas, the sun, snakes, dogs, wild horses, gazelles, goats and people on Beyukdash, Kichikdash, Jingirdag and Yazyly-tepe mountains. The only difference between them is in the style of composition, and the character of their arrangement, that depends on the time of their creation.
