Giant BuddhaTakaoka Daibutsu, Takaoka, Japan
The Takaoka Great Buddha was finally completed 26 years after its reconstruction began in 1907. One of the three famous Great Buddhas of Japan along with those in Nara and Kamakura, it is infused with the style and techniques of local bronze ware manufacturers. It is said that the Yoshikatsu Minamoto had the first Great Buddha made out of wood about 800 years ago. Since then it has been destroyed or burnt down on countless occasions, only to be rebuilt each time due to public demand. Also known as Japan’s most handsome man, it continues to be loved as a symbol of Takaoka, home to the best bronze ware in Japan.
