Ghalya’s Museum of Modern Art, Muscat, Muscat Governorate, Oman
A unique and exclusive addition to the Omani art and cultural landscape, Ghalya’s Museum of Modern Art showcases Oman’s vivid heritage and culture. The museum has been typically designed on the lines of a mid-twentieth century traditional Omani house. The décor and modern artwork are reminiscent of that period while incorporating subtle tones of the recent development in Omani heritage across three decades.
The museum exhibits relics preserved from the period of 1950 till mid-1970 and is mostly centered on the memorabilia of the family that owned this sea-board property. Take in the charm of this delightful museum that encompasses a modern art gallery and a quaint little-furnished house, encapsulating the melancholy of the pre-Renaissance period and the vibrancy of contemporary creativity.
The museum unveils like a puzzle, swathed in a petite central courtyard, occupying more space than one’s logic allows. The old box of Kraft cheese, biscuit tins kept in the former kitchen, intricately crafted doors featuring East African elements, all evokes the old world charm of the bygone era.
