Gezira Island, Giza, Egypt
Gezira Island, created by flooding in the 14th century, is currently one of the most up-scale and luxurious districts of the city. Until Mehmet Alí built a palace here in 1830, it remained uninhabited. Today, Gezira Island, also known as Zamalek, has important buildings like the Cairo Tower, the Opera House, high-end hotels and even its own football team.
