German Mining Museum

The German Mining Museum Bochum, founded in 1930, is the Leibniz Research Museum for Georesources and is committed to collecting, preserving, researching, exhibiting and communicating the material heritage of mining.

We fulfill this order above and below ground, locally in Bochum, regionally, nationally and internationally. Our credo is: Spread knowledge – experience mining. We do all of this under one roof.

Our research areas include archaeometallurgy, mining history, materials science, mining archeology as well as the research laboratory and the mining historical documentation center (montan.dok).

In the four tours of our permanent exhibition – hard coal, mining, mineral resources, art – and in our demonstration mine, we convey the fascination for the world of mining.

The German Mining Museum Bochum – founded in 1930 – is one of eight research museums in the Leibniz Association. It researches, conveys and preserves the history of the extraction, processing and use of georesources across epochs. Discover the fascinating world of mining on the tours of the permanent exhibition and in the demonstration mine. We warmly welcome you – above and below ground.
