Gemstone Beach, Orepuki 9881, Southland Region, New Zealand
Gemstone Beach is known for its constant state of change from sand to stones with the storms and tides.
Half a kilometre from Orepuki lies Gemstone Beach – beautiful, wild and fascinating. Semi-precious gems such as garnet, jasper, quartz and nephrite can often be found on the beach. A few hours beachcombing could easily yield gems such as hydrogrossular, jasper, fossil worm casts and the elusive sapphire. It is also a great beach for surfing and surfcasting.
This is number 15 on the Riverton-Aparima Heritage Trail Map and number 34 on the Southern Scenic Route Map.
