Centred on buzzing Hurst Street, the Gay Village is a vibrant district of al fresco coffee shops, late-night pubs, raucous bars with drag shows and cabaret, and nightclubs in former factories. Nearby, the Hippodrome Theatre presents ballet and musicals, and there are stand-up comedy shows at The Glee Club. Dim sum restaurants, noodle bars, and Asian supermarkets fill the Chinese Quarter’s neon-lit streets.
Birmingham has a large LGBTQ community and the village is renowned for its lively, cosmopolitan environment and free-thinking attitude. Each May Bank Holiday weekend Birmingham Pride LGBTQ festival is held in the Gay Village on Hurst Street. It is uniquely the largest LGBTQ two day festival in the UK. The Birmingham Gay Village is an LGBT district or “gaybourhood” next to the Chinese Quarter in Birmingham city centre, centred along Hurst Street, which hosts many LGBT-friendly businesses.
