Frankfurt Archaeological Museum

Combs, spoons, food bowls, and barbed wire—archaeological finds narrate tales of life, survival, and the harsh realities of death within the Nazi forced labor camps. Since the 1990s, archaeological excavations have been conducted at former camp sites in Berlin and Brandenburg, unearthing a wealth of artifacts. The exhibition “Excluded: Archaeology of Nazi Forced Labor Camps” presents many of these items for the first time. With over 300 objects across seven chapters, it provides insight into the intricate system of forced labor camps, their archaeological legacy, and the work of contemporary historical archaeology.

Camps where individuals were incarcerated or housed against their will served as crucial instruments of control for the Nazi regime. Forced labor camps encompass concentration camps, satellite camps, prisoner-of-war camps, and forced labor camps.

This exhibition is organized by the Brandenburg State Office for the Preservation of Monuments and Archaeological State Museum and the Documentation Center for Nazi Forced Labor. In cooperation with the Berlin State Office for the Preservation of Monuments, the Brandenburg Memorials Foundation, the Archaeological Society in Berlin and Brandenburg e.V., and the Foundation “Remembrance, Responsibility and Future.”
