
François Alabrune’s distinguished career exemplifies a steadfast commitment to diplomacy and international law. Born on January 12, 1962, in Halifax, Canada, he pursued higher education in France, earning a law degree from the University of Limoges in 1982. He furthered his studies at the Paris Institute of Political Studies (Sciences Po), graduating in 1984, and later attended the École nationale d’administration (ENA), completing his studies in 1988 as part of the “Michel de Montaigne” cohort.
Embarking on his diplomatic journey in 1988, Alabrune joined the Legal Affairs Directorate of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs. His early postings included roles at France’s Permanent Representation to the European Union in Brussels (1992-1996) and as Legal Adviser at the Permanent Mission of France to the United Nations in New York (1996-2000). In 2004, he was appointed Consul General in Quebec City, a position he held until 2009. Subsequently, he served as Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) in Vienna from 2009 to 2014.
In 2014, Alabrune returned to Paris to assume the role of Director of Legal Affairs and Legal Adviser at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a capacity in which he represented France before various international judicial bodies, including the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court. His expertise in international law led to his appointment in September 2022 as the French Ambassador to the Kingdom of the Netherlands and Permanent Representative to the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW). In these roles, he continues to champion international cooperation and legal diplomacy.
Beyond his professional endeavors, Alabrune is dedicated to promoting gender equality, serving as an International Gender Champion since 2022. He is married to Jacqueline Alabrune, and together they have two children, Marie and Pierre. Fluent in French and English, with knowledge of German, he is currently learning Dutch to deepen his engagement with the host country.
