Fortress of Alexander the Great, Nurota, Uzbekistán

A series of eroded mud-walled fortifications and buttresses line the hill south of Nurata village, dating from Alexander the Great’s founding of the town of Nur here 2300 years ago. The fort was meant to defend the settled lands of the south from the nomads of the steppe to the north. There’s not a great deal to see but the views over Nurata are good and the connection with Alexander is compelling.
