The Fortaleza de São José de Macapá is the preferred place to visit in the amapaense capital, according to citizens. It is one of the oldest in the city.

The fortress is located in an area of ​​almost 30 thousand square meters in the center of the city, on the banks of the Amazon River, which bathes the capital.

It is the only monument registered by the Institute of National Historical and Artistic Heritage (Iphan) in Amapá, according to the historian and journalist Edgar Rodrigues. With almost 20 years of construction, the fortress was inaugurated on March 19, 1782
