Fort Saint Elme, Collioure, Languedoc-Roussillon, France

Sentinel Coast Vermeille , from the top of its walls, discover the entire coast of Collioure to Sète , Canigou , the chains of Albères and Corbières. Relive five centuries of epic clashes between French and Spanish by visiting its Arsenal Museum.

Originally, there was only a watchtower (guardia). It was in 1538 that Emperor Charles V built an imposing fortress. This revolutionary building by its star design, its height, the thickness and inclination of its walls, its undetectable interior defenses, is the work of the Italian architect Benedetto Ravenna.

Remodeled by the great architect Vauban in 1680, Fort Saint Elme was the scene of many battles during the Revolution, especially in 1794. The Fort resisted!
