Food Garden

UBC Botanical Garden’s Food Garden in Vancouver showcases sustainable, organic cultivation of diverse edible crops. Visitors can explore various plant beds, learn about crop rotation, and gain insights into urban agriculture practices. The garden also contributes to the community by donating harvested produce to local food banks, supporting those in need.

The Food Garden is part of the UBC Botanical Garden, which is the oldest university botanical garden in Canada, established in 1916. The garden practices organic gardening techniques, avoiding the use of pesticides, and focuses on sustainable agriculture education. The produce harvested from the Food Garden is donated to the Salvation Army’s food bank, benefiting the hungry and homeless in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. The garden features seven different beds, including roots, tomatoes, and brassicaceae, with crops rotated annually to prevent the buildup of insects and disease. Visitors can learn about various crops and sustainable gardening practices through new signage and educational opportunities in the garden. The UBC Botanical Garden also offers a Horticulture Training Program, providing education in landscape construction, garden ecology, plant biology, and more. The garden is open to the public, offering a variety of programs and events throughout the year
