Festungsmuseum Heldsberg

Immersive fortress museum exploring Switzerland’s 20th‑century military history.

Festungsmuseum Heldsberg is a fascinating military museum situated on the hills above St. Margrethen in eastern Switzerland. Housed within the original Artillery Fortress Heldsberg, the site was an integral part of Switzerland’s defensive network from World War II through the Cold War. Today, it offers visitors an extraordinary opportunity to explore historic fortifications and gain insight into the country’s military preparations during the 20th century.

The museum experience takes guests through the fortress’s underground tunnels, where original artillery positions, command posts, barracks, and support facilities remain largely intact. Exhibits detail the strategic importance of the fortress in protecting the Rhine Valley and the southern Lake Constance region. Special exhibitions rotate regularly, highlighting military technology, life in the fort, and historical context for Switzerland’s defensive measures.

A highlight of the museum is the associated command bunker of Border Brigade 8, featuring over thirty rooms that illustrate Cold War operations and military organization. Knowledgeable guides and volunteers provide tours, bringing the history and stories of the soldiers to life for visitors of all ages.

The site also includes a small refreshment area where guests can pause and enjoy the surroundings. From the fortress, visitors are treated to sweeping views across the Rhine Valley and nearby landscapes, making the museum not only a historical experience but also a scenic one.
