Ferry to Alcatraz Island

All Alcatraz Island tours depart from and return to Pier 33 Alcatraz Landing, located along San Francisco’s northern waterfront promenade, on The Embarcadero near the intersection of The Embarcadero and Bay Streets. They are located approximately 1/4 mile from San Francisco’s beloved Fisherman’s Wharf. Taking the ferry to Alcatraz Island is one of those rare San Francisco experiences that feels both deeply historical and strangely intimate, as if the city itself is whispering its darker, more fascinating stories directly into your ear. As the boat pulls away from Pier 33 and the skyline recedes, the infamous prison grows larger against the blue bay, its weathered concrete buildings and crumbling lighthouse standing exactly as they did when the last inmates left in 1963. Once home to Al Capone, Robert “Birdman” Stroud, and George “Machine Gun” Kelly, Alcatraz was considered inescapable because of the frigid, swift currents of the San Francisco Bay—currents you feel rushing past the ferry’s hull and that instantly make the old escape tales far more believable. The Native American occupation of the island from 1969 to 1971 adds another powerful layer; faded protest graffiti still clings to the water tower and buildings, turning a former federal prison into an unexpected site of civil-rights history and indigenous resilience.

Stepping onto the dock and walking up the steep hill toward the cellhouse, you’re immediately struck by how well-preserved everything feels, yet how alive with stories it remains. The award-winning audio tour, narrated by former guards and inmates, guides you through narrow corridors and into tiny cells where you can almost hear the clanging doors and distant foghorns that once kept prisoners awake at night. Standing inside D-Block or peering into the solitary confinement cells of “the Hole” is genuinely haunting, but the island offers beauty too—stunning 360-degree views of the Golden Gate Bridge, Angel Island, and the city sparkling across the water, along with gardens originally planted by inmates and now bursting with roses, succulents, and seabirds that wheel overhead. Whether you’re drawn to true crime, military history, social justice movements, or simply want the most dramatic postcard view of San Francisco imaginable, the ferry ride to Alcatraz delivers something unforgettable, a perfect blend of chills, reflection, and pure Bay Area beauty that lingers long after you’ve returned to the mainland.
