Ferro House, Maputo, Mozambique

Designed by Gustave Eiffel, Casa de Ferro perplexes its visitors with its impractical building material highly unsuitable for a hot tropical climate. Built of Eiffel’s signature material–cast iron and iron sheets–the house was constructed in Belgium and shipped to Mozambique where it was assembled with bolts on concrete foundations. Originally intended for the governor’s residence but never occupied, the house now provides a home for an amateur writers association. The nearby botanical garden is also worth visiting.
