EU–UK Summit.

Agenda highlights

  • António Costa, President of the European Council, and Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, will be meeting with Sir Keir Starmer, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, in London on 19 May 2025 for the first EU-UK summit since the UK’s withdrawal from the EU. High Representative Kaja Kallas and Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič will also participate.
  • The summit will be an opportunity to demonstrate a common stance in working together for peace and security in Europe and to establish a new strategic partnership.
  • The EU and UK leaders are expected to reaffirm their commitment to tackling strategic and geopolitical issues, and to further enhance cooperation on foreign and security policy. They will also discuss ways to strengthen bilateral engagementacross various areas of cooperation.

Background

EU-United Kingdom relations

  • The United Kingdom is a former EU member state, which left the European Union in January 2020.
  • Following the UK’s withdrawal, the EU-UK relationship is now governed by agreements that ensure respect for citizens’ rights, fair competition and continued cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
