Smyrna is the second largest port in Turkey after Istanbul , and the third largest city in population 1 2 after Istanbul and Ankara . It is located next to the Aegean coast , near the Gulf of Izmir , between the peninsulas of Foça and Clazómenas, and about 450 km southwest of Istanbul . It is also the capital of the province of Izmir .

In medieval times, Westerners used forms such as Smire, Zmirra, Esmira, Ismira, which was translated as İzmir in Turkish
