The Emperor of Japan

The emperor of Japan, literally “ruler from heaven” or “heavenly sovereign”, is the hereditary monarch and head of state of Japan. The emperor is defined by the Constitution of Japan as the symbol of the Japanese state and the unity of the Japanese people, his position deriving from “the will of the people with whom resides sovereign power”. The Imperial Household Law governs the line of imperial succession.

The Emperor of Japan, currently Emperor Naruhito, is a pivotal figure in Japanese history and culture. Born on February 23, 1960, as the eldest son of Emperor Emeritus Akihito and Empress Emerita Michiko, he ascended the throne on May 1, 2019, following his father’s historic abdication. Emperor Naruhito is the 126th emperor in a lineage that is said to be the world’s oldest hereditary monarchy, with a history spanning over 2,600 years.

Educated at Gakushuin University in Tokyo, Naruhito later studied at the University of Oxford, where he pursued research on the history of transportation on the River Thames. This academic background, along with his fluency in English and experience abroad, reflects his broad perspective and modern approach to his role. As Emperor, Naruhito’s duties are largely ceremonial and symbolic, embodying the unity of the Japanese state and its people. He participates in numerous national and international events, promoting peace, cultural exchange, and the welfare of the nation. His reign, known as the Reiwa era, symbolizes a time of “beautiful harmony,” aiming to balance tradition with contemporary values in Japan’s evolving society.

The Empress of Japan

The Empress of Japan, Empress Masako, is a significant figure in Japanese history and contemporary society. Born on December 9, 1963, as Masako Owada, she comes from a distinguished background, having studied at Harvard University and Oxford University. Before marrying then-Crown Prince Naruhito in 1993, she had a promising career as a diplomat. Her marriage brought her into the Imperial Family, where she became an emblem of modernity and internationalism within the traditionally conservative institution.

The Empress role involves various ceremonial duties, supporting numerous cultural, educational, and charitable activities, and representing Japan on the international stage. The ascension of Emperor Naruhito in May 2019 marked her rise as Empress, a role in which she continues to symbolize hope and continuity for the Japanese people. Despite the pressures of her position, Empress Masako’s grace and intelligence have earned her respect both domestically and globally.
