Emily Fleckner

A career member of the Foreign Service, Emily Fleckner is excited to join the team in Calgary as Consul General.  She previously served as Deputy Chief of Mission to the U.S. Embassy in Brunei Darussalam, including more than 18 months as Chargé d’Affaires.  She is the 2022 winner of the James Clement Dunn award for her work to help shape Brunei’s response as ASEAN Chair to the coup in Burma and reverse decades-long discrimination against American diplomats and their spouses.

As Special Assistant to the Under Secretary for Political Affairs, Emily focused on South and Central Asia, counterterrorism, and diplomatic security.  She served for four years in Ho Chi Minh City as Economic Section Chief, where she led efforts to level the playing field for American businesses in southern Vietnam.  Emily also worked to strengthen post-conflict reconciliation and economic development in Sri Lanka and Maldives and has served in Dubai and Mexico City.

Emily Fleckner, the U.S. Consul General in Calgary since August 2024, exemplifies the dedication and impact of American diplomacy. A career Foreign Service officer, she has held pivotal roles across the globe, including serving as Deputy Chief of Mission and Chargé d’Affaires at the U.S. Embassy in Brunei Darussalam. During her tenure there, she was instrumental in shaping Brunei’s response as ASEAN Chair to the coup in Burma and in reversing longstanding discrimination against American diplomats and their spouses. Her exceptional service earned her the James Clement Dunn Award for Excellence in 2022.

Fleckner’s career reflects a commitment to advancing U.S. interests and values. As Special Assistant to the Under Secretary for Political Affairs, she focused on South and Central Asia, counterterrorism, and diplomatic security. Her leadership as Economic Section Chief in Ho Chi Minh City was marked by efforts to level the playing field for American businesses in southern Vietnam. Additionally, she has contributed to post-conflict reconciliation and economic development in Sri Lanka and the Maldives, and has served in Dubai and Mexico City.

Academically, Fleckner holds a master’s degree in political economy from the London School of Economics and a master’s degree in national security from the U.S. Naval War College, completed in June 2024.

In Calgary, she continues to foster strong U.S.-Canada relations, engaging with local leaders and communities across Alberta, Saskatchewan, and the Northwest Territories. Her dynamic leadership and dedication to public service underscore her role as a bridge-builder and advocate for diplomacy.

Emily graduated from the U.S. Naval War College of Newport, Rhode Island with a master’s degree in national security in June 2024.  Before joining the Foreign Service, Emily was a senior editor at the Economist Intelligence Unit in New York City and earned a master’s degree in political economy from the London School of Economics.  She is joined in Calgary by her husband and two daughters.
