Dr. Johann Wadephul is an inspiring figure whose life combines public service, legal scholarship, and a deep sense of duty. Born on 10 February 1963 in Husum, Schleswig-Holstein, he grew up in a family of teachers and developed an early connection to his northern German roots. After completing his secondary education, he served in the Bundeswehr between 1982 and 1986; he remains active as a reserve officer at the rank of lieutenant colonel.
Wadephul then pursued law at the University of Kiel, passing his state examinations in 1991 and 1995 and earning a doctorate (Dr. iur.) in 1996. His legal career, particularly specialising in medical and social law, provides a foundation of rigour and empathy. He entered politics early, joining the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in 1982, rising through state politics in Schleswig-Holstein, then entering the Bundestag in 2009.
On 6 May 2025 he assumed the role of Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs under Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
