Dar Essid Museum, Sousse, Tunisia
An ornate interior with elaborate tilework is just part of the draw of Museum Dar Essid, a small private museum that gives an intimate portrait of a well-to-do 19th century Essid family. Richly decorated period rooms with meticulously preserved furniture and items depict the daily life of an aristocratic family made up of senior officials of the city administration.
The building with a tiled courtyard was built in 928, making it one of the oldest in the city. Information sheets give you a chance to walk at your own pace through massive arched doors and see a collection of photographs and portraits. Top floor has a cafe, just above the servant’s room. Overlooking the medina, the 65 m tall tower offers sweeping views of the city below.
