Danserindebrønden, Helsingør, Copenhagen Region, Denmark
The sculpture was performed by sculptor Rudolph Tegner, ordered by brewer Carl Jacobsen, who in 1910 asked sculptors Edvard Eriksen (1876-1959), Carl Bonnesen (1868-1933) and subsequently also Rudolph Tegner (1873-1950) about drafting a memorial, It should honor the ballet. As a patron, Carl Jacobsen himself had quite certain opinions about the design of the monument, and the choice fell on Tegner.
Three women from the Royal Ballet modeled the dancing women on the well. Their names are engraved on the edge: Elna Jørgen Jensen Lauesgaard, Emilie Smith and Grethe Ditlevsen. Both the three women and the well are cast in the bronze.
The Danserinde well has not always been in Helsingør. When the statue was unveiled on 6 June 1913, it was located in the Parterrehaven at Rosenborg Castle in Copenhagen. In 1915 it was moved to the lawn near Sølvgade, and here stood the Danserinde well until it was moved to Helsingør in October 1933.
